The Advantages of Scheduling Social Media Posts in Advance

Among Social Media Community Managers, there is a spirited debate questioning whether to schedule posts. The pros are very obvious: you save time and become more efficient but the risks are also apparent – what about the errant or ill-timed post during a potential crisis?
Marketing automation has its advantages but nothing replaces human judgement – someone watching and monitoring public sentiment and whether something is good taste or appropriate to post.
For simple calendar reminders, holiday announcements or FAQ kind of information to help your customer, scheduled posts can be a blessing. But I recommend always keeping an extra eye on your scheduled activities to make sure your organization or brand is still saying what you need to say in the right way … at the right time.

Have you ever had one of those days (or months) where you just can’t keep up with everything being thrown at you? There are times when our office has to take care of an emergency and other things seem to fall by the wayside, including our proactive and positive social media posts.

That is why we find it very beneficial to schedule our social media messages in advance.  Whether it is details about an upcoming district event, back-to-school information or a reminder to take a survey – you can use several tools to set up social media posts ahead of time.

Our office uses the scheduling tool on Facebook as well as the free version of HootSuite for Twitter.

Scheduling your posts offers many opportunities and advantages:

  • You are in control of your posting schedule and can post on social media in the evenings and weekends without having to be…

Facebook ads — do they work?

I have used Facebook Ads for school-related campaigns as well as for other types of PR activities. They are a very cost-efficient way to drive awareness and exposure. Try them, but don’t limit yourself. LinkedIn, Twitter and Google PPC ads are valuable sponsored placements.

I had always wanted to try a Facebook ad. Suddenly last spring an opportunity arose when the school board decided – at the very last minute – to approve open enrollment (a new option in our state) for students who live beyond our boundaries.

With only a four-week application window, no advance notice and a tiny budget, I decided social media might be my only affordable option to get the news out quickly.

The process is easy: On your Facebook page, under the gear symbol, click “Create Ad.” Then, just follow the steps.

To create your ad, use a compelling picture, some bullet points that appeal to your target audience and include a link to your website. You can create several different ads if you wish, and the campaign will use them in rotation.

Can you afford this? Yes, because you set the budget up front. Facebook will not exceed the…

RE: APR Critics: Down With Education!

RE: APR Critics: Down With Education!

There are so many public relations and marketing professionals who criticize the APR.

Yet, here I am, studying for the APR exam and hoping to achieve this monumental credential before the year is out.  I am not fazed.

I don’t mind the chatter and I don’t let other people’s definition of the APR persuade my decision to go for the credential. Getting the APR for me is showing my commitment to public relations. That’s it! I love the aspect of striving for a higher standard – this is much needed in PR due to those in the profession who give it a bad name. Even when I was a news reporter I didn’t mind PR people or give them names like “flack,” but I understand they were just doing their job. And on some days, I needed them to help me with my stories, give me access to the CEO or official, or help me round out my perspective.

I appreciate PRSA recognizing that it was time to update the credential and do better. This is a positive step in diversifying the types of people who obtain the APR, and give it more meaning to those who already possess it.
